Travel Insurance for One-Way Ticket: Cover and Limitations

The good news is that you don’t need a return ticket to buy this travel insurance.

As we’ve recently changed our insurer, please select the date range you bought (or will buy) your policy:

Policies purchased on or after 1 Nov 2018 (GMT)

Policies purchased before 1 Nov 2018 (GMT)

For policies purchased on or after 1 Nov 2018:

Under a UK policy, you can start and end your journey anywhere in the world with or without a ticket home. Policy and time excesses (referred to as waiting periods in policies purchased before 1 August 2019) may apply and there is no cover for pre-existing medical conditions.

Be aware that:

  • The cost of your return ticket is considered part of any normal trip cost and therefore it isn’t covered under this policy. If you must cut your trip short and return home to the UK  for a covered reason but you don't have a return ticket, there’s no cover to claim for the cost of any return ticket.
  • The policy covers emergency overseas medical expenses only and will not cover you for general health checks or vaccinations required for the purposes of obtaining a visa.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything. Take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details on what is and isn’t covered especially the general exclusion and the specific exclusions under all sections of the policy. That way there are no surprises if you need to use it.

Note: For policies purchased on or after 1 August 2019, your World Nomads policy is underwritten by XL Catlin Insurance Company UK Limited. For policies purchased between 1 November 2018 and 31 July 2019, your World Nomads policy is underwritten by certain underwriters at Lloyd’s.

For policies purchased before 1 Nov 2018:

The good news is that you don’t need a return ticket to buy this travel insurance.

As a UK or Irish citizen, you can commence and end your journey anywhere in the world with or without a ticket home (if not a UK or Irish citizen, do read the article  'Can I buy a policy while already travelling' for more information on eligibility).

Be aware that:

  • the cost of your return ticket is considered part of any normal trip cost and therefore it isn’t covered under this policy. So if you must cut your trip short and return home to the UK or Ireland for a covered reason but you don't have a return ticket, there’s no cover to claim for any travel expenses.
  • If you are travelling on a one-way ticket for the purposes of emigration, the policy benefits will cease within 24 hours of arrival into the country you are emigrating to. However, if you’re planning to do some travelling around before you settle and start working, you can buy a policy to cover this travelling period but again, cover will cease once you stop in the one place to settle.
  • The policy covers emergency medical only and will not cover you for general health checks or vaccinations required for the purposes of obtaining a visa.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything. Take the time to read the terms and conditions in the policy wording for full details on what is and isn’t covered. That way there are no surprises if you need to use it.

Note: For policies purchased before 1 Nov 2018, your World Nomads policy is backed by Millstream.
