Can Travel Insurance Help If My Bags Have Been Damaged?

What’s covered

Yes, your policy can help if your bag has been damaged by the airline or other common carrier. You can make a claim for your damaged baggage and personal effects provided they are owned by you and you have taken all reasonable measures to protect your stuff at all times.

The maximum amount you can claim for damage to your baggage and personal effects and the per item limits depends on which plan you buy (Standard or Explorer).

What you need to do to make a claim

  • notify the liable common carrier of the damage as soon as possible and obtain written confirmation that your baggage has been damaged
  • provide evidence of the damage to support your claim (the claims department will discuss with you what is required as proof depending on the nature of the damaged item).

What's not covered

Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the full description of cover in the Travel Protection Plan for full details on what’s not covered.

Here are the main things that aren't covered for damage:

  • musical instruments
  • professional equipment (if you use it for work, it's considered professional equipment)
  • brittle or fragile items
  • wear and tear, or gradual deterioration
