Am I covered by travel insurance if I have a pre-existing medical condition?

Pre-existing conditions – unless they are controlled and stable - are not covered for Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Accidental Death and Dismemberment, Emergency Sickness Medical Expense, and Emergency Accident Medical Expenses.

A pre-existing condition is defined as something that you:

  • have shown symptoms of; or
  • have received or have been recommended to receive a test, exam or treatment for; or
  • took or received a prescription for

in the 90 days prior to the effective date of your policy. Some examples of pre-existing conditions include (but are not limited to) high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer and heart conditions.

If you have taken or received a prescription in the 90 days prior to the effective date of your policy, the pre-existing condition exclusion doesn’t apply if:

  • the problem is treated or controlled solely by the taking of prescription drugs; and
  • has remained treated or controlled with no adjustment to that prescription in the 90 days prior to your policy effective date.

An example would be if you had high cholesterol and take a statin, but there have been no changes or adjustments to your medication, or any other treatment for that condition, in the 90 days prior to your effective date.

This is a summary only. It does not include all terms, conditions and exclusions of the policies described. Please refer to the actual policies for complete details of coverage and exclusions. This way there are no surprises if you do need to use it. When you’re ready, you can get a quote online. And if you have any questions, please, contact us for help.
