Travel Insurance: Delayed and Missed Flights

This information is for residents of Helpdesk Global only.

Only the Explorer Plan can cover additional expenses should your travel plans be delayed through no fault of you own or if you miss your flight due to a covered reason.

If you’re delayed or miss your flight, there are a number of options available to you where you can claim additional expenses. Do be aware though that you can claim only ONE of the following 4 benefits if your flight is delayed or missed.

1.World Nomads Travel Delay Cover

If your booked public transport is cancelled or delayed for more than 12 hours (departing from or returning home), you can make a claim for any additional expenses incurred during the delay eg telephone calls, meals and refreshments etc.

You can claim up to £50 per person every 12 hours (after the first 12 hours have passed) up to a maximum £200 per person. No policy excess applied to Trip Delay claims.

2.World Nomads Trip Abandonment cover

Cancellation costs (up to the policy limits under the Cancellation benefit) can be claimed if you can no longer travel and must abandon your trip (applies only if you have not yet departed from your country of residence) because:

  • your booked public transport to travel from the United Kingdom/Ireland is cancelled or delayed for more than 24 hours; or
  • you are denied boarding on the flight on which you were booked to travel from the United Kingdom/Ireland (because there are too many passengers for the seats available) and no other flight could be provided within 24 hours

3. Additional Travel and Accommodation Cover for Delayed and Missed Flights - World Nomads

If you must pay for additional (and reasonable) accommodation and public transport expenses (Economy class) to enable you to reach your overseas destination and/or in returning to the United Kingdom/Ireland, you can claim these expenses if:

  • your booked public transport being cancelled, delayed for more than 12 hours, diverted or re-directed after take-off; or
  • you’re denied boarding (because there are too many passengers for the seats available) and no other alternative flight could be provided within 12 hours

Claims for additional transport and accommodation expenses are valid only if no alternative is offered by the public transport operator. Other conditions apply which can be read in Section 10 on the policy wording.

4.Missed Departure Cover - World Nomads

We’ll cover your reasonable additional accommodation (room only) and travel expenses (Economy class) incurred if you don’t make it in time to board any onward connecting public transport on which you are booked to travel, including connections within the United Kingdom/Ireland as a result of:

  • the failure of other public transport;
  • strike or industrial action;
  • adverse and unforeseeable weather conditions;
  • you being denied boarding because there are too many passengers for the seats available
  • the vehicle in which you are travelling being involved in an accident or breakdown, or you being delayed as a result of a major accident on a motorway (if you missed your flight because of a vehicle breakdown or a road accident, a police or roadside assistance report must be obtained).

Delayed and missed Flights - What you must do to be covered with World Nomads

1. You must check in, (according to your itinerary) unless your transport provider operator has requested you not to travel to the airport / port.

2. Obtain a written confirmation from the public transport operator (or their handling agents) of the cancellation, number of hours of delay or denied boarding and the reason for these together with details of any alternative transport offered.

3. You must seek financial compensation, assistance or a refund of your ticket from your public transport provider, in accordance with a passenger protection scheme in the event of denied boarding, cancellation or long delay of flights.

What's not covered

Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the full description of coverage in the policy wording so there are no surprises if you do need to use it.

Here are just some situations where no cover is applicable:

1. if sufficient time has not been allowed for your journey in order to meet the check-in time(s) specified by the transport providers or agent;

2. any costs incurred by you which are recoverable from the public transport operator

3. denied boarding due to your drug use, alcohol or solvent abuse or your inability to provide a valid passport, visa or other documentation required by the public transport operator or their handling agents;

4. anything mentioned in the General Exclusions.
